It has moments of LOL funny scenes as well as some kick you in the gut seriously heavy parts. If you haven’t read it, I highly recommend you grab a copy and see why it’s a NYT best seller and won the National Book Award for young people’s lit in 2007.

So, why am I blogging about it?

I have decided that I need a short comics project to “loosen me up” before I start drawing pages for the (longer) graphic novel that I’ve been plotting for the last couple of years. Also, rather than writing something original for this project, I’ve decided to draw from an existing story because it will allow me to focus fully on the comics storytelling and character design.

I chose the basketball scene from Part Time Indian, where Arnold faces Rowdy. There are several reasons for this choice. First, it has a nice story arc that can be told in about a dozen pages. Second, there’s a good mix of dialog and action. Third, there are many characters, so it will be a challenge to make them all “read” properly in just a few pages.

Here are a couple sketches of the work in progress. I’ll post more soon.
